Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but if your braces are causing you discomfort, there are a few things you can do to make yourself more comfortable until we are able to see you in the office. We will strive to schedule an emergency appointment with you as soon as possible. In the meantime, here are some pointers if you find yourself in certain situations.
Wire Irritations
For orthodontic wires that break and may be poking the inside of your mouth, you can cut them with sterile nail clippers. For irritations caused by the braces/wires, place patient-comfort wax on the end of the wire for immediate relief. We will provide our patients with wax at the beginning of treatment, but local drug stores also carry orthodontic wax in the dental aisle, as well.
Mouth Sores
Brush the affected area with warm salt water during the morning and night, and rinse. Repeat four to six times per glass of salt water. If the sore has not healed within a week, call our office to schedule an appointment.
Loose Brackets
Remove the bracket if possible and place patient-comfort wax over the area. If you cannot remove it, call our office so that Dr. Sherman can replace the bracket as soon as possible.
Dr. David Sherman will be able to help with any orthodontic emergencies. Be sure to call our New York, New York location at 646-370-3768, or our Manhasset location at 516-487-0660 if you have any concerns.
