Once your braces are removed, the retention stage begins. Retainers are most important in the period right after your active treatment, when your teeth may have the greatest tendency for regression. Dr. David Sherman will often suggest a long-term retainer schedule to ensure that your teeth remain in their desired positions. Your compliance with wearing your retainers determines how long your orthodontic results will last. We offer a few different types of retainers in our office:
- Hawley Retainers are one of the most common types made of metal wires and acrylic and can be personalized with a variety of patterns and colors. The retainer is specially made to fit to the roof of your mouth and keep your teeth secure in their new position.
- Fixed Retainers, or bonded lingual retainers, can be permanently bonded to the inside of your lower canines to keep them from shifting. As a permanent appliance, it is important to keep them clean. Remember to clean the wire along with the inside of your teeth while brushing. If it breaks during the retention phase, please call our office immediately instead of adjusting it yourself.
- Essix Retainers are clear removeable retainers that fit over the entire arch of your teeth. They are durable, inexpensive and virtually invisible.
